Wakeel storms to first win for Hyam at Oakbank

Mar 30, 2013

Smart colt Wakeel has unleashed a huge finish to post his first win for the John Hyam stable in the MMM Handicap (1100m) at Oakbank.

Wakeel joined the team in February, beginning his career as part of the Morphettville stable with a solid fifth in Rating 75 company at Morphettville on March 11 before his successful outing.

Hyam dropped the son of Shamardal back slightly to Rating 71 company but the three-year-old took on older horses in the Oakbank contest.

A hectic early speed left jockey Troy Baker with no option but to give Wakeel time to get balanced at the back of the field with the promising galloper last rounding the tricky Oakbank home turn.

Baker got Wakeel balanced early in the straight before the handy prospect began to work through his gears , gathering momentum for a big finish.

Wakeel hit top gear about 150 metres from home, surging home over the top of the short-priced favourite Schumacher to score by a length.

The win was Wakeel’s third from 10 starts while the colt earned a $15,000 winner’s cheque, taking his winnings to more than $52,000.

Congratulations to Wakeel’s owners - Mrs M M Kingsbury & C W Kingsbury.
